Two Dozen

Shunt 23 was not the one. Only six days since her last surgery, Carly was back in the OR today for another shunt revision. We started noticing symptoms of a shunt failure as we headed into last weekend but we were really hoping that it was simply a slow recovery from surgery. It became clear this wasn't the case yesterday and we needed to have neurosurgery tap the shunt and remove some fluid to help Carly be comfortable through the night. Today Dr. Gupta found that the valve, despite its German engineering, was obstructed as was the peritoneal catheter. He replaced the entire system again, using the custom aluminum ventricular catheter with a new valve type that Carly hasn't had before. This cycle that Carly has been stuck in is a real test of our patience and faith, but we will never stop envisioning her feeling great and reaching her full potential and Team Carly will not be deterred.

Love, Brad

we are also staying positive with you and sending extra love and prayers that this one is the one. and we are envisioning a time in the near future when Carly is well and you look back and feel thankful that you remained undeterred and positive.

Tomorrow especially, you will all be in our thoughts when we give thanks for all the lessons of love, strength and perseverance that you two and Carly teach us. We are thankful that sweet Carly has the two best parents in the world looking out for her. We are thankful for Dr. Gupta who seems to continuously give his all. We are thankful to be a part of Team Carly. And finally we are thankful for faith and hopefulness -- because they help to light the sometimes dark path toward recovery.

Oh no, I had a lot of hope for the German engineering. I am sorry to hear Carly hit another rough spot, but glad to see that you are staying positive. Amazing that Carly has such strong parents and that she is such a powerhouse of perseverance herself. Sending love to you always. Jen & Gil
